studio remodel

i am excited to share some of the changes and updates that have been going on around here. i am approaching the ten month anniversary of moving out of my studio in sodo and wanted to show you why i am so happy that i did. i am currently working out of a home studio in west seattle, a decision i was originally nervous to make. moving from a hip commercial building in sodo and into my own space was a giant step even though i knew it was the right one to make. being a studio shooter i needed a place to work but being new to seattle where no one knew me, having a bunch of unnecessary overhead was hard to justify, it was quite the conundrum. to make the moving decision easier i made a list of what worked and didn't work about my space in sodo and after seeing it on paper the decision was easy.

once my mind was made up we were tasked to find a new home that fit our living and working needs, that was a bit of a process and a story i will keep for another time. the outcome is that we landed in west seattle in a new constructed house with an old garage still on the property. over the last 10 months we have been changing it from an old garage to a very well equipped home studio that i have had the pleasure of producing some notable projects in. it has been a work in progress and the result has been a very enjoyable place that is virtually distraction free to do work.

welcome back. here is a very long overdue blog post, i've been busy with projects and a studio remodel (which i will elaborate on soon) and have neglected sharing anything via the blog.

here are a few images from a test i did with art director jenny fort, the concept was a simple exercise in graphic abstractions. she had the idea of doing something with balloons, the type clowns like to use. we both found that making shapes out of balloons is harder than it seems and if we were to continue the project would consider hiring an actual clown. we set out to do a few variations of each color but popped so many in the process that these were what we were left with. the purple are my favorites and working with jenny was a lot of fun. more tests to come..

HECTOR THE COLLECTOR

Hector the Collector
Collected bits of string,
Collected dolls with broken heads
And rusty bells that would not ring.
Pieces out of picture puzzles,
Bent-up nails and ice-cream sticks,
Twists of wires, worn-out tires,
Paper bags and broken bricks.
Old chipped vases, half shoelaces,
Gatlin' guns that wouldn't shoot,
Leaky boats that wouldn't float
And stopped-up horns that wouldn't toot.
Butter knives that had no handles,
Copper keys that fit no locks,
Rings that were too small for fingers,
Dried-up leaves and patched-up socks.
Worn-out belts that had no buckles,
'Lectric trains that had no tracks,
Airplane models, broken bottles,
Three-legged chairs and cups with cracks.
Hector the Collector
Loved these things with all his soul‹
Loved them more than shining diamonds,
Loved them more than glistenin' gold.
Hector called to all the people,
"Come and share my treasure trunk!"
And all the silly sightless people
Came and looked...and called it junk.

that pretty much sums up being a still-life photographer and being inspired by all that is around you. below are some "treasures" from my found series, these relics were collected on a recent trip to eastern washington. more to come.

tbwa/pepsi very short/very cheap film festival

the wait is over! this is my first moving image project.. well kind of, still images put to motion. it was great working with my friend rob lewis on this and seeing some familiar faces while working in colorado. when i first heard the details of this project my reaction was... you want to do what???? its amazing what you can accomplish with a good plan and some motivated people. this project was great for the creative spirit but horrible on the back and knees. regardless, i'm proud of it and look forward to working with these guys again.

this video is for a global competition amongst all the agency's in the TBWA network. every year they pick a brand to use as a theme, this year it was pepsi. rumor has it, the winners will be shown at cannes film festival. keep your fingers crossed!

top secret

this is the first behind the scenes glimpse of a top secret project i've been wanting to share. their are over 1000 cans on this set, so many i wasn't able to fit them all into frame with my iphone. what is the point of all those cans......? you will know soon.
